Ivy Bridge Processors Released

On Monday, Intel took the wraps off its first third-generation Core processors, which have been known by their code-name, Ivy Bridge. The new chips bring Intel into the realm of 22-nanometer processing, a big step down from the 32-nm build process, which rival Advanced Micro Devices is still working with.Intel Ivy Bridge

That means these are the first 22nm logic chips, marking a technology milestone. On top of that, the chips are faster and more power-efficient than their Core predecessors.

“Ivy Bridge sets the stage where the rest of the industry will need to measure their design and fab process and geometries against Intel’s new 22nm design,” said Patrick Moorhead, an analyst with Moor Insights & Strategy. “This is in some ways an evolution and a game changer.” Chip wars Intel’s Ivy Bridge chips raise the bar for rivals Intel ready to take on tablet chips AMD execs tout firm’s tablet plans AMD moves away from Intel rivalry, rethinks course AMD’s 8-core desktop chip puts it back in the race with Intel Intel, ARM set for next stage of laptop battle AMD hires ex-Lenovo exec Rory Read as new CEO Intel’s new smartphone chip is key ARM battle Intel: Atom’s multiple OS feature an edge over ARM Intel to add new hibernation features to PC chips More: Processors Topic Center

“It is big for Intel in that it is the first in the marketplace with 22nm. This means a smaller die for better costs and it fundamentally enables better power characteristics for better performance at less power,” he said.

Moorhead added that Ivy Bridge provides what he’s dubbed an evolutionary 10% to 20% improvement in general purpose compute performance. However, that also offers revolutionary improvements in terms of recoding video, since the new chips are seeing a “20X speedup,” he said.

The Ivy Bridge lineup right out of the gate includes 13 quad-core processors for high-end desktops, laptops and all-in-one designs. In the next few months, Intel will introduce Ivy Bridge chips for ultrabooks, as well as mainstream laptops and desktops.

“It’s a pretty big deal,” said Jack Gold, an analyst with J. Gold Associates. “The initial ships are targeted at higher-end desktops. But soon Ivy Bridge mobile chips will be available. This is what will power next-gen ultrabooks. The lower power/higher performance could be a game-changer. And it will be difficult for AMD to catch up in the short-term.”

Gold noted that enterprises will appreciate faster boot times and longer battery life for laptops and ultrabooks.

Dan Olds, an analyst with The Gabriel Consulting Group, said Ivy Bridge is a good evolutionary step for Intel and for the end users.

“Ivy Bridge is also the first processor to use Intel’s FinFET three-dimensional transistor design, which pays dividends both in terms of power use and performance,” Olds said. “Overall, Ivy Bridge should be close to 30% faster than Intel’s Sandy Bridge processor it replaces, while consuming 20% less power.”

He said the new chips are built for low-power more than high-performance. “We’ll see faster chips using less power over time, bringing more performance to smaller devices that don’t suck down batteries like a three-year-old drinking chocolate milk for the first time,” Olds said.

Windows 8 Due To Launch in October

The Consumer Preview for Windows 8 was launched on February 29, a day that only comes around once every four years. However, you don’t have to wait until 2016 for Microsoft to launch the OS properly. It’s common knowledge that Microsoft is aiming to get the final build of Windows 8 out the door by the end of this year. What we don’t know, is when exactly it might happen.

Today brings rumors that Microsoft is eying an October release date. Word comes via Bloomberg, which gets its information from people with knowledge of Microsoft’s schedule. According to Bloomberg’s sources, Redmond will finish work on Windows 8 this summer, which will set the stage for PCs and tablets running on Windows 8 going on sale around October.

This would fit in with both the Windows 7 launch, which was October 22 of 2008, but also ensure that manufacturers were able to ship products in time for the all important holiday shopping season. It also gels quite nicely with last week’s rumors that Lenovo wanted to be first out the door with a Windows tablet and was aiming for an October launch.

Bloomberg’s sources say Microsoft has scheduled an early April event for its industry partners. The company will reportedly spill the beans on its Windows 8 release strategy, offering details on timing and strategy. April is only two weeks away, guys. Hopefully it will bring with it something solid on the Windows 8 release.

Intel Discontinuing Over 25 Desktop CPUs

Intel is reportedly making room for the flood of new Ivy Bridge CPUs slated to arrive in April.

Unnamed industry sources in Taiwan claim that Intel has updated hardware partners with a new schedule that sees the halt of over 25 existing desktop CPU models. The cease in production will reportedly start in 1Q12 in order to make room for the new 22-nm Ivy Bridge processors slated to launch sometime around April 8, 2012.

According to the sources, Intel has issued a notice to cease production of the following CPUs:

1Q12
- Core i7-875K/860S
- Core i5-760/750S/655K
- Celeron 450/430

2Q12
- Celeron E3500
- Celeron E3300
- Core i7-960/950/930/870
- Core i7-880S/870S
- Core i5-661/660
- Core i5-2300/680/670
- Core i3-530
- Core Duo E7500/E7600
- Pentium G960
- Pentium E6600/E550
- Pentium E5700

Intel is slated to launch Ivy Bridge on April 8. On the whole, Intel is expected to release a total of 25 models including 17 CPUs for the desktop and 8 for notebooks and ultrabooks. The first desktop flood will include the Core i7-3770K, 3770, 3770S, 3770T CPUs, the Core i5-3570, 3550 and 3450 CPUs, and the Z77, H77, Z75 and B75 chipsets. Then in May, Intel will unleash the Core i5-3470T CPU along with the Q77 and Q75 desktop chipsets.

As for notebooks, Intel will reportedly release the Core i7-3920QM, 3820QM and 3720QM CPUs along with the HM77, UM77, HM76 and HM75 notebook chipsets (followed by the QS77 and QM77 chipsets in May). Sources claim that other models including the Core i5-3520M, 3360M and 3320M CPUs for notebooks, and the Core i7-3667U and Core i5-3427U CPUs for ultrabooks will officially be unveiled at a later date.
